Before turning to the topic of vegan foods that heal kidney disease, I would like to address some key background issues such as oxidations, antioxidants and free radicals. I will begin by defining some of these terms:

Oxidation is the physiological process that involves multiple chemical reactions that then result in the production of energy that’s required for everything that is going on in the body. Without oxidation, there can be no life. However, disproportionate amounts of oxidation of fats, fatty acids and cholesterol generates harmful free radicals which are molecules that breakdown proteins, destroy the delicate membranes of cells and damage genes.

As I’ve mentioned, free radicals are harmful molecules that cause enough damage in the body to result in chronic and degenerative medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cataracts, a wide range of inflammations and many other diseases including chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Antioxidants are nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and enzymes that are present is various food groups that have the ability to counteract or neutralize the excessive oxidation process that creates harmful free radicals.

Time and time again, research shows that the foods which are rich in antioxidants protect the body against free radicals and, therefore, prevent the onset of the above mention medical conditions as well as help reverse them.

In cases of kidney disease and patients who are on dialysis, renal dietitians advise the following kidney-friendly foods which are actually all plant-based. Thus, here are just some of the many vegan foods that heal kidney disease because they all have low sodium content while having high levels of potassium, phosphorus, essential vitamins and minerals and, of course, antioxidants to fight free radicals and other:

Green Cabbage
Olive Oil
Onions (white, brown, red or green)
Red Bell Peppers
Red Grapes
